Itinerary:
1. Around Kaltern
Kaltern lies on a little lake and is one of the most famous villages in the wine area around Bolzano. In October it is common to walk through the vineyards to drink some wine and have some snacks.
The lower mountains around Kaltern offer great hiking and cycling opportunities with views into the snow covered Central Alps and Dolomites.
A bit further north is the beautiful Vinschgau Valley with access to the snow-capped peaks of the Ötztal and Ortler Alps.
2. Lake Garda
Lake Garda can be reached in an hour by car from Kaltern. The area itself offers enough activities for a two week holiday and is one of Europes most popular tourist destinations.
The northern part of the lake has strong winds and is therefore the perfect place for wind and kite surfers. Limone and Malcesine in the middle are lovely small villages and the south is better suited for classical sun bathing and swimming.
You may switch the order of this itinerary and continue from Lake Garda south to Bologna and the Cinque Terre.
3. Lago di Braies & the Dolomites
We focused on the northern part of the Dolomites and hiked in the area around Lago di Braies, Lago Sorapis and Tre Cime. The nearby Valle di Casies offers cheaper and better accommodations than the more known villages in this area like Cortina d’Ampezzo but of course that means at least a 30min drive to the start of the big trekking routes.
